MARENGO — Budget woes are forcing the Marengo Park District to keep the northern Illinois city's swimming pool closed this coming summer.
The Northwest Herald reports that park district board attorney John Cowlin says the pool has operated at a deficit for the last several years. He says it costs more than $40,000 a year to keep the pool open.
Cowlin says the pool closure isn't permanent. He says if money becomes available, officials have the option to open the swimming pool again.
Jennifer Haas is the mother of three young children. She says it's a shame and a loss to not have the swimming pool. She says Marengo is a small community and the pool was "one thing you can count on."
