Something for the young folks

(posted by Ken)

Roads are always a worry

Before I was on the Roads ADHOC I really paid very little attention to the roads other than seeing potholes and the speed bumps. Now I find myself looking at the road condition constantly as I drive around the lake.
At first I thought it would be a good winter for the roads with not a lot of cold weather and heavy snow. Thinking into it further the worst time for road deterioration is the spring with the freeze thaw cycle. This year we have had almost nothing but freeze thaw cycles…all winter! In my opinion the roads are showing it with a fair number of new weak areas showing up.
It is a good thing we plan to do the first three years of the ten year plan the first year to get a jump on the problem and we will probably have to look at other areas for 2013 that are not in the current plan if the deterioration continues. This should be fine. The reserves are in good shape at this point so if necessary we can expand a little.

A note on credit unions

I published a post a couple weeks ago regarding how to research for better CD rates using the internet. If you consider credit unions it may be wise to be sure they are federally insured through NCUA. A few are insured by ASI and that may be fine but it is private insurance, not government backed. Just a heads up so all understand the difference.  Ken

On this Super Bowl Sunday

Most of you know Denver quarterback Tim Tebow will not be playing in the Super Bowl this year. He, however, has shown a great number of young fans religion is something to be proud of. The son of missionaries in the Phillipines, he is a born again Christian and is not afraid to let everyone know. When asked if he feels God has taken sides in the games, his perfect response was to say God is not interested in football games. It is, after all, just a game. What a great role model in times when our young folks need one so badly. The pose above has come to be known as Tebowing. He does this after games, win or lose, to thank God for the blessings.

It runs in the family

These are my two great-grandsons. You can see where they get their friendly dispositions. I had to share this. Perfect future board members!

The "cinder block express!"

Feb. 2nd Lake management dragged cinder blocks with sleds on to the ice then drilled 5 holes in the ice and placed approx. 75 blocks at each location totaling 3000 lbs. This will increase the lakes spawning area and create a fish habitat for smaller fish to hide from the larger fish trying to eat them.
Pictured are Bob McHoes, Tom Pinkowski, Jim Brefield, and Todd Jones doing the heavy work. We should all be thankful for those dedicated volunteers willing to work so hard for our community.
A big thank you also to Barb Appelhans for her volunteer work supplying the great pictures she always takes.

This should do it

The final mailing of the resstated CC&R ballots should be in homes by now. As expected, the first mailing came back strongest  with over 800 YES votes, the second mailing brought in a couple hundred more, and the third should push us over the top so we can move on to the ByLaws. The vast, vast majority have been YES votes and that is appreciated, proving almost all the P.O.s get the fact we must pass these to be in compliance.
There are always three or four people who believe there is some great conspiracy and that also is expected with every board action no matter how necessary or important to the community. This is the way of the world whether it be in school classes, church, a place of employment, whatever. Naysayers are always present. The board will deal with that and press forward doing the work of the association in the best interests of the property owners.

One less candidate

One of the candidates for the board of directors in the upcoming election has decided he is going to withdraw. Todd Morgan notified the board secretary he will not be in the race. That still leaves seven candidates for the five open seats. This is a very important election so it is smart to read all the profiles in the latest Candlewick news and try to make it to the candidate forum at the rec center. The forum will be at 1 p.m. February 12. Hope to see you there.

Football and the Blonde

A guy took his blonde girlfriend to her first football game. They had great seats right behind their team's bench. After the game, he asked her how she liked it.
"Oh, I really liked it," she replied, "especially the tight pants and all the big muscles, but I just couldn't understand why they were killing each other over 25 cents."
Dumbfounded, her boyfriend asked, "What do you mean?"
"Well, they flipped a coin, one team got it and then for the rest of the game, all they kept screaming was... 'Get the quarterback! Get the quarterback!' I'm like...Helloooooo? It's only 25 cents!!!!"

Interest rates and savers

The Fed has announced they intend to keep interest rates low at least through 2014 due to the economy’s weakness. If you are a borrower this is good but if you are a saver it is not so good. With CD rates currently almost laughable and a lot of seniors being pinched with low yields at a time in their lives when safety of capital is important all should know there are a few higher rates available if you are willing to shop around and use your computer for comparisons. Sure, you will be investing and use a bank you may never see but if it is FDIC insured it is still fine. I am putting a couple links below that to many are familiar but just in case you may want to check them out. There are no great rates anywhere when safety is utmost but you may do a little better. Happy hunting!

Our page reader count

You may have noticed we have been having problems with our page view counter off and on for some time. Counts are missed and it has been causing slow page loading. Our new counter on the right is the official count from Google, our host, so hopefully the problem will be solved. We appreciate your interest in our site.   Ken

The lake….2012

The lake management commission plans to be active in the coming months in an effort to contain nutrients that enter our lake from the runoff area that includes farm fields. Last year was a tough one for the lake with some extremely hot temperatures and heavy algae. The commission plans to install circulation devices in the inlet known as “the dip”, which is the smaller of the two inlets in the west end of the lake. Plantings are also being planned to absorb some of the nutrients.
Although the budget is not yet approved for the expenditures, the cost is in the current budget and the board is expected to approve. We all know the lake is the central asset of our community. We are after all known as “Candlewick Lake.”
