Surprising fact

I read in the Wall Street Journal today health expenditures in 2010 equated to $8,402 per person. That seems very high especially when thinking in terms of a family of four spending $33,608. I guess when the last few years of life are taken into consideration it may not be as off base as it first seems.

I called this one wrong

When the AQUA rate increase request issue started some time ago I contacted the ICC and after some discussion with them I came to the conclusion it would be pretty much like when you sell a car. You come up with an asking price and the proposed buyer (ICC) looks the car over, explains to you all the problems, and makes an offer. My impression was AQUA would provide the rate request that would be more than they actually expected to get, the ICC would look it over and tell them some of it wasn’t warranted, then grant maybe half the request. I felt the comment period was little more than smoke and mirrors. I was wrong.
The AQUA commission headed by Mary Budreau has made a lot of headway. Mary would be the first to insist this was through the hard work of all the commission members. Those folks spent a lot of time and now even the Illinois attorney general office is involved as well as some political leaders. I believe they are actually going to be able to save all of us some money. Our entire community has come together in agreement on this issue and it proves when we all work as one good things will happen.
When I am wrong I will admit it. I would have dropped the ball but others chose to push forward when I thought it was a waste of time. We should all be proud of them. The final decision from the ICC is not in of course but no one can ever say those commission members didn’t give it their all!

Illinois taxes....well, that worked well

After raising our Illinois personal income tax rates by 66% and the corporate tax rate by over 40% it seems all is not well in Springfield. There is never quite enough tax money for their spending needs.
Senator Dave Syverson today issued a press release indicating Moody's has now downgraded our Illinois State debt rating to the lowest of any state in the nation. Obviously increased taxation is not the way to grow an economy and produce jobs. Will they never learn? It is the same as if you own a business with not enough customers and the solution you feel is to raise prices.
My opinion only.....Ken Dillenburg

Your Sunday smile

Back in the days before many churches had wireless microphones, a preacher was wired for sound with a lapel mic, and as he preached, he moved briskly about the platform, jerking the mic cord as he went. Then he moved to one side, getting wound up in the cord and nearly tripping before jerking it again. After several circles and jerks, a little girl in the third pew leaned toward her mother and whispered,"If he gets loose, will he hurt us?"

                                                                          Berne Barc

                                                                   Resident Lenard Lund.

Gary Fasetti's incorrect water bill was reviewed.

What a great turnout!

It became obvious to both Bob Bensko (hearing officer) and Tony from AQUA our property owners are not going to take this lying down. This was so important for them to see. The attending elected officials also now know our side of the issue. I believe this was the largest crowd I have ever witnessed here, probably numbering well over 300.
Mary Budreau presented the opening comments very well and she was followed by several speakers making their individual objections and comments quite clearly. We have a solid case and we intend to present it to whomever necessary to obtain proper relief. Senators Dave Syverson and Christine Johnson both spoke supporting our efforts.
A sincere thanks to all who came to show support or present our case to the ICC. Our voices have been heard loud and clear by all parties. It is now up to the ICC to make the final decision, hopefully knowing our elected officials are watching from the sidelines.

Thursday night...hope to see you there. Join me in stating our case.

DON’T MISS OUT ON YOUR CHANCE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE !

We’ve all complained about our high water and sewer bills for years but we haven’t had the opportunity to make our voices heard when it really mattered. Finally, we have the chance to be heard. Whatever you do, don’t miss out on this chance to make a difference.

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) will be hosting a Public Forum at the Recreation Center on Thursday, January 5th at 7 PM. This forum will be open to the public to discuss the general increase in water and sewer rates proposed by Aqua Illinois. It’s your chance to make a difference by attending and commenting about the high water and sewer bills you’ve been paying for years.

You can speak or you can submit a written comment, either way, your concerns will be given serious consideration by the ICC when it makes its decision in February about the Aqua Illinois request for a rate increase.

We look forward to seeing you at the Public Forum and together we’ll make a difference!

Electronic voting

Call me old fashioned if you wish but I have never been a fan of electronic (computer) voting. I have always felt it would be just too easy to have the votes altered considering the amount of hacking we see going on in everything from personal to business to government. Monday I read an article in DENTAL FLOSS magazine (yes, there is such a thing) that solidified my feelings on the subject.
A group of computer scientists was asked to see how difficult it would be to change votes by hacking. It was called comically simple. Using just $25.00 worth of components they could not only hack in but change votes electronically from a half mile away using a remote control.
I doubt sufficient safeguards will ever be in place to make this type voting truly secure. At least that is my take on it.

Polar Plunge...Barb Appelhans photos

The crowd of supporters watch as the plunge begins
Steve Westlund (Cheerleader) accepts the certificate of participation from Sue Witt
The cold, cold participants in the freezing water
Rich Witt (Plunge organizer) reads the precautions to the participants prior to the Plunge.

Barb had many more great pictures but I didn't post some that were close to the same as the ones I posted earlier...except hers are much better as usual!

Posted by Ken

Just a preview...Barb's pics will be better

It was a cold, windy day on the lake that takes no prisoners. A few brave souls ventured into the water to prove they could withstand anything Mother Nature could throw at them. The rain and snow had stopped but the temp.
and wind were competing for first place with both holding in the mid thirties. Not a day for a quick dip.

Everyone survived the plunge. Rich Witt read the suggested cautions before it started. He also had a
throw ring and rope just in case. The rescue squad arrived on scene as a precaution but unfortunately it was right  after the event had ended. No harm done.
Will I join in next year? Not a chance. These people either have lost their sense of hot and cold or are just plain crazy.

It's here. Let's make it a good year!

It will be an interesting year

These people are obviously nuts. I am sure I would not make it out of the water!
