One of my sons suggested a walk on the “Stone Bridge Trail” as a nice place for some scenery so last Friday evening my wife and I decided to try it. We drove up Belvidere Road to Roscoe then right on Main Street and a quick right on Broad Street. Follow Broad Street and you will eventually see a blue water tower at the end of the street. We parked there, went over a small steel bridge, and started south on the trail.
I was amazed at all the wild flowers including wild roses, Queen Ann’s Lace, and an array of yellows, blues, purples, and more that I couldn’t identify. The trail is shockingly high with very steep drops on both sides. The area is wooded and looks like it must have far in the past. About a five minute walk took us to the Stone Bridge. Before getting to the bridge the sound of fast water rushing over rock could be heard and when we were over the creek the view didn’t disappoint.
There is a railed walkway going down what would be the equivalent of several flights of stairs to the creek itself and a good view of the bridge. We made it down two sections of the walkway (not stairs but a path) before the mosquitoes drove us back so I didn’t get to actually see the bridge but it was still well worth the walk. I am told the bridge was built around the turn of the century and is of arched stone, a masterpiece of engineering and beauty.
If you have a little time you might want to check it out. I am sure we will go back, probably in the fall when the mosquitoes give up their territory.
