Our lake

We posted yesterday there is blue green algae present in the lake. Just to put this into perspective, this is not that unusual an occurrence. Many lakes go through the same situation most summers as have we. The main thing is simply to use caution. Don’t get the water in your mouth or allow your pets to drink the water. Swimming in the coves is also not a good idea.

This has been an exceptionally hot summer as we all know and that contributes to algae. Our lake is fed for the most part by field run-off which contains nutrients to feed algae. My understanding is the only way to rid ourselves of the blue-green algae is to treat the entire lake. That is expensive and can cause other problems from the treatment.

Most of us who have lived here for 20 plus years can remember the way it used to get in the summer. The fingers would get so thick it would look like you could walk on the surface. There would be a smell from the rotting algae. If you want to see a real algae bloom travel to Lake Puckaway in Wisconsin. I remember it well. What we have is nothing compared to some lakes. It will remedy itself as the water cools and daylight shortens in the fall.
