"Wounded Warrior" tournament in the rain

First annual Wounded Warriors fishing tournament sponsored by the Candlewick Anglers and Poplar Grove Pro Hardware and Bass Pro Shop was held Oct. 13th with a total of seven boats entering. Dru Appelhans won the tournament with the highest total weight of fish 11.72 lb. and Brad Betke won for Biggest Bass with a 2.96 lb. beauty.
Wounded Warriors Project {WWP}began when several veterans and friends moved by stories of the first wounded service members returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq took action to help others in need. What started as a program to provide comfort items to wounded service members has grown into a complete rehabilitative effort to assist warriors as they recover and transition back to civilian life. Tens of thousands of wounded warriors and caregivers receive support each year through WWP programs designed to nurture the mind and body and encourage economic empowerment and engagement.
This years fishing tournament was in memory of Iraq Veteran James Gosnell with a total of $525.00 raised from the tournament entry fee, donations and raffles of prizes donated by Poplar Grove Pro Hardware and Bass Pro Shops along with gift certificates to Pacemaker Country Side grocery store.

Lots to do...click to enlarge

I guess “intense” would be the word

Thursday evening at the special open board meeting we discussed next year’s budgeting requirements. This is very early in the process but in this meeting Tracy (G.M.) brought forth the list of expenditures the department heads requested for the next fiscal year as well as other projections on reserves and his thoughts.
This turned into a fairly long meeting as we scrutinized many of the requests and several were scrapped for next year due to funding concerns. We must prioritize even though some of the dropped items would have been nice. There was a fair amount of disagreement on some of the proposals but this is one thing of many I like about this board, we can disagree, sometimes heatedly, but when it is over we all walk away with no hard feelings. Everyone in that meeting had the best interests of Candlewick in mind and we all know it. You win some and lose some.
One thing that was definitely agreed upon is moving forward with lake remediation. It will not be cheap but as the centerpiece of our community we MUST have an attractive, usable lake. I’ll keep you in the loop as this develops.

Did you notice the swans?

Two of them have been in Boone Lake for a few days now. They are both the brown/white ones that I noticed were not being accepted well by the other swans so they must have moved on. We will have to figure out a way of getting them out for winter boarding or they will not last the winter.

Thursday "this & that"

What do you think is a fair call on inflation this year? Anyone on social security may want to listen up. The cost of living increase is to be announced October 16th. The best guess is 1.5% to 1.7% increase in your SS check. I mentioned here before my medicare premium went up around 34% with lower coverage so the increase won't be close to covering that alone and anyone believing inflation is 1.5 to 1.7% must be living in a cave eating their own vegetables for food.
*********************************************************************
Did you happen to notice the moderator for tonight's vice -president debate (Martha Raddatz) by some odd coincidence had as one of the guests at her wedding none other than Barack O'bama. On the guest list he was "Barry O'bama." One sided moderation? Not a chance, right?  (wink, wink) Let's see if this is on the national news on ABC, her employer.

Belvidere Chamber of Commerce

Since our last board meeting I have spoken with several people regarding my decision to vote “no” on the motion to continue membership. Some P.O.s have told me of advantages to membership and prior board members have mentioned help the Chamber has provided in the past. Much of this I did not know. There was also support for my “no” vote.
The point had been made it is "only" a few cents per P.O. As soon as I hear "only" I do not react well. To me that word should never enter into any budgeting or payment process. "Only" makes it too easy to spend.
Karl Steiskal attended the lunch meeting with the head of the Council a few days ago and was kind enough to fill me in on more things the Council does for us. This issue will once again be on the agenda at the next regular board meeting for further discussion and a possible new vote. We’ll see where it goes at that time.

A Sunday consideration

Dean Koontz
“Because God is never cruel, there is a reason for all things. We must know the pain of loss; because if we never knew it, we would have no compassion for others, and we would become monsters of self-regard, creatures of unalloyed self-interest. The terrible pain of loss teaches humility to our prideful kind, has the power to soften uncaring hearts, to make a better person of a good one.”

Candlewick Anglers fly fishing class

Not a widely known skill in our area, Tom and George taught the art of fly tying and fly fishing. Flies are tied from the shown materials and on the lower right is the finished product. This is a really fun way to catch bluegills.

Have you signed up yet?

Tuesday I signed up to help with the annual leaf clean up days. As with so many of the projects here it ends up with most of the coverage being from us old guys. We need more able bodied young folks helping out. Last year some of the guys ( & ladies) brought their kids so that was a help but some of these projects just need younger people in general. I know most of the guys with families have other things to do but even a couple hours will help. Please at least consider it. I have been in your shoes so I get it.
